Tenerife holidays with a baby or young child: Protect them from the island’s intense sun! ☀️👶
Share
Tenerife is a dream destination for families: beaches, pools, and mild weather all year round. But be careful—the Canaries’ sun is particularly intense, even when there is a little wind or a few clouds. Many parents underestimate its strength and regret it afterward. Here is a practical guide to enjoying your holiday safely with a baby or young child.
Why is the sun so strong in Tenerife?
Located near the equator, the island receives very high levels of sunshine, and UV rays are stronger than in mainland Europe. Reflection from the water, sand, and roads further increases the risk of sunburn. Even in winter, protection is essential.
Essential sun protection rules
- Sunscreen: the essential first step Choose a high-protection sunscreen (SPF 50+), specially designed for babies and children (a mineral formula if possible). Apply generously 30 minutes before exposure and reapply every 2 hours, even after swimming. Don’t forget the face, ears, neck, and backs of the hands.
- Sunglasses and a cap/hat A good pair of UV-approved sunglasses protects children’s sensitive eyes. A cap or wide-brimmed hat is essential to cover the head and face.
- Suitable clothing Choose lightweight long-sleeved clothing made of cotton or UV-protective fabric. It provides an excellent natural barrier. Avoid dark swimsuits, which absorb more heat.
- Stay hydrated Give your child something to drink very regularly, even if they don’t ask for it. Dry air and sunshine cause faster dehydration. For babies, offer the breast or bottle frequently.
- Smart timing Avoid the sun as much as possible between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. Plan outings in the morning until 11:30 a.m. and in the late afternoon. This is also the ideal time for a nap in the shade or indoors.
Additional tips for a relaxing holiday
- Stay in the shade as much as possible (under a parasol, beach tent, or trees).
- Watch for signs of heat exhaustion: red skin, irritability, and fatigue.
- For babies and toddlers, a UV-protective swimsuit with built-in protection is an excellent investment.
Many parents don’t realize how strong the sun can be in Tenerife and leave their children exposed for too long without sufficient protection. Sunburn on a baby’s skin can be painful and increase long-term risks. Prevention is better than cure!
By following these simple tips, you can make the most of your family holiday while keeping your children healthy and well protected.
Planning your trip to Tenerife? Consider booking your baby equipment in advance (all-terrain stroller, parasol, etc.) for greater comfort during your stay.
